Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an effective therapy for many mental health conditions. The basic foundation for Oriental medicine is that there is a life energy flowing through the body which is termed Qi (pronounced: chee). According to Chinese Medical theory, mental illness occurs when there is imbalance within the body.  Imbalance can come from an excess or deficiency of yin and yang that disrupts the flow of qi or energy through the body. Traditional acupuncture using fine needles at various points along lines of energy on the body called “meridians”. This energy flows through the body on these meridians that connect all of our major organs.  Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points located near or on the surface of the skin which have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions in order to achieve the desired effect.

For some patients, including young children, a cold laser may be used instead of needles. This type of acupuncture treatment is very effective and totally painless. Recent studies have shown that laser acupuncture can have a positive effect on those suffering from depression.

Acupuncture (Pediatric)

For children under the age of 7, a specialized form of needleless acupuncture called Shonishin is used. This therapy uses a special set of tools and parents can be taught some techniques to be done at home between office visits. According the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, “Practitioners insist Shonishin offers a viable alternative to pharmaceuticals in the treatment of childhood health problems--everything from behavioral and emotional to many physical conditions. It has been used with some success in treating infants and children afflicted with a wide variety of conditions, including colic, indigestion, GERD, constipation, and diarrhea. It has even shown some success in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), allergies, asthma, eczema, hives, bedwetting, and stuttering. Children as young as one month old have been effectively treated.”
